First time applying for CDCP?

Are you looking for affordable dental care for yourself or your family? Do you want peace of mind knowing you're prepared for any unplanned dental expenses?
If so, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) can help!
This new federal program covers a broad range of services and is designed to make dental care more affordable.
Oral health care is important to your overall health and well-being. Regular checkups and treatments through the CDCP can help you maintain a healthy smile and prevent conditions like tooth decay, gum disease, and other serious health issues, like cardiovascular disease and stroke.
What is covered?
The CDCP covers a portion of the cost for a wide range of oral health care services from CDCP-approved providers.
Find a CDCP provider near you.
Covered services could include things like:
- dental exams
- fillings
- x-rays
- cleaning
- tooth extraction
- minimal sedation
- standard complete dentures
- most standard root canal treatments
- crowns
- removable partial dentures
- moderate and deep sedation
- general anesthesia
- complete specialist examinations
The plan does not cover services like:
- Implants
- Implant-related procedures
- Veneers and mouth guards
Some services have limits on how often they can be covered by CDCP, and others need pre-approval. For a full list of covered services, limitations and exclusions, view the Dental Benefits Guide.
How much will I need to pay?
CDCP helps make dental care more affordable for you and your family by covering a portion of the cost of many services.
You may still need to pay for:
- A co-payment, depending on your income (see details below),
- Any difference between what the CDCP covers and what your provider charges, and
- Services that are not covered by the CDCP.
How do co-payments work?
If your adjusted family net income is over $70,000, you will need to pay a portion of the cost of dental services covered by the CDCP. The percentage you pay depends on your income:
|
Adjusted family net income |
*Co-payment percentage |
|
Below $70,000 |
*Co-payment is not required. |
|
$70,000 - $79,999 |
*40 per cent co-payment required. |
|
$80,000 - $89,999 |
*60 per cent co-payment required. |
View examples of co-payments and additional charges under the CDCP.
*Regardless of your co-payment, you will need to pay the difference between what the CDCP covers and what your provider charges, as well as for services not covered by the CDCP.

What you need to know if you receive support through Social Development
If you receive support from the Department of Social Development, you will need to apply for the CDCP and renew your benefit every year between April and June.
If you already have health and dental coverage through Social Development (a white or yellow card), please apply. Both plans will provide you with more/better dental coverage! Your current coverage through the Department of Social Development will not change.
If you receive support from the Department of Social Development, but do not have a health card, you might be eligible for the CDCP.
To learn how the Canadian Dental Care Plan works with Social Development’s Health Card to support you, and to find answers to common questions, view our Frequently Asked Questions.
You may be eligible for the CDCP if you, and your spouse or common-law partner (if you have one):
- Don’t have dental insurance through a work, school, pension, or private plan,
- Have an adjusted family net income under $90,000,
- Are a Canadian resident for tax purposes, and
- Filed your tax return in the previous year and have received your notice of assessment. If you have not filed your taxes, find a free tax clinic near you.

How to use your CDCP coverage
To use your CDCP coverage, book an appointment with a provider who accepts CDCP clients. If you don’t already have an oral health provider, you can use the provider search tool to find a CDCP provider near you, or call 1-888-888-8110.
To make it easier, CDCP payments are sent directly to your dental provider.
To avoid unexpected costs, before accepting care from an oral health care provider, always:
- Confirm that the provider will accept a CDCP client,
- Make sure your appointment is on or after your coverage start date and that your coverage is active,
- Know your co-payment level (if you have one),
- Ask your provider which services are covered and if there are any additional costs, and
- Confirm that any services requiring preapproval are approved.
- Share if you have dental coverage through a government social program (for example Social Development or the Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision program. This will allow your provider to coordinate coverage between plans.
To complete your application, you will need to provide the following information for each applicant, and your spouse or common-law partner (if you have one):
Social Insurance Number (SIN) (if available for children),
Date of birth,
Full name,
Home and mailing address,
List of any dental coverage or benefits you currently have, and
Notice of Assessment for the previous year (to verify your family income).
