Nursing Home Waitlist Dashboard

Nursing Homes are designed to care for older adults who require 24/7 care. Trained staff provide supervision, personal care, meals, medications, and housekeeping services. Nursing homes also offer medical and rehabilitation services, and social and recreational activities. 

The Nursing Home Waitlist Dashboard was created to give everyone access to the same information. By sharing waitlist information, the Department of Social Development helps individuals and families:

• prepare and plan for future needs,
• understand how long they may wait,
• make informed choices, and
• arrange care during the waiting period.

Being open and honest can help people feel more in control, reduce stress, and build trust in the long-term care system.

About the dashboard

The dashboard provides data on:

• The total number of people waiting for a nursing home in each zone and facility across New Brunswick (see map of each zone below), and
• Median wait times for admission into specific nursing homes in calendar days. The ‘median’ is the middle point, meaning half the people waited less time and the other half waited longer.

Data is updated on the 15th of each month. It includes information available up to the last day of the previous month.

How are wait times calculated?

Wait times are calculated from the day someone is approved for a nursing home until the day they move into their chosen nursing home.

• Data includes admissions from the past 12 months.
• If no wait time appears for a nursing home, it means there weren't enough admissions in the past year to calculate one.

The data excludes the following types of admissions:

• Social admissions,
• Interim placements (temporary placements in another nursing homes while waiting for a preferred choice),
• Transfers from one nursing home to another, or
• Emergency placements due to health and safety concerns.

Please note that individual wait times may vary based on several factors such as care needs, the number of people on a facility’s waitlist and, the number of beds in a nursing home.
